The Distinguished Career of an Educated Antibody

Jan 13 17:57:20

This time our hero is an immunoglobulin G protein by the name of Jenner, clept after the great scientist who invented the smallpox vaccine. As his human's proteases enzymes broke Jenner down, ending his long and eventful life of eight and twenty days, he recounted his history to the bored young phagocytes who were listlessly circulating around with him.

"It was a time of great turmoil in Anastasia when I was synthesized. As a horde of pathogen monsters assailed our human, a helminth antigen bound to the receptors on the surface of my producer, activating her and differentiating her into a plasma cell. I was synthesized by this plasma cell for the special purpose of scouting out and marking for destruction these vile antigens, and I immediately set out to do so.

It wasn't long before I encountered a malignant pathogen and bound to it, thereby attracting the attention of a valiant neutrophil clept Erasmus, who then bound his body to mine and engulfed the pathogen, destroying it as it killed him."

Here Jenner was interupted by one of the phagocytes, "Erasmus! The Erasmus? Do you mean to say you fought against the great infection of 28, December?"

"The very same."

The phagocyte shook his white-hooded head, "I envy that Erasmus. To fight an infection, and an infection like that one! To see prions! To die in such a glorious manner! I wonder how many minutes will go by before I can sacrifice myself to the great cause! Go on, your history is most diverting."

Jenner continued, "I will have to be brief, for I am breaking up quickly. Knowing from my educatation during synthesization how terrible was the antigen I was synthesized to mark, and how best to mark it, I vowed to mark any of them I met with afterward. So for days I circulated around the blood stream, fighting the antigen I was specialized for, seeing my fellow immunoglobulins produced in droves at the onset of infections and vaccinations. Seeing them scout, seeing them die. And now my own time has come. Good bye my friends and fare well. May you all do your best, but pray not for an infection simply because you restless. Remember that your fight is not a game. It is part of the grander circulatory system."

And with that the tired old immunoglobulin G was broken down and recycled by the natural cellular processes.

THE END
