How Fnora Solves the Social Media Brain-Fry Problem

Fnora is a social media site for people who are tired of the tracking, ads, and the general banality that is ubiquitous on the big platforms. On Fnora, users can create posts and blogs targeted to user defined audiences. We call this "connecting in context," and it allows users to tailor their post audience such that tales of drunken debauchery intended for frat brothers aren't visible to bosses or elderly family members. Those who want to regale their friends with such tales but appreciate proper styling can employ Fnora's QTML editor for proper typography ( bold , italics , and underlining ) so we are no longer dumbing down the language by putting quotation marks around everything. Fnora has no character limit for posts, blogs, or comments, so there's no need to create those weird Twitter thread strings. With Fnora, users are in control and their content is their own.

Fnora Requires a Small Amount of User Due Diligence

With these new powers, though, comes some responsibilites for Fnora users. Since there are no ads, Fnora will be a subscription service that charges a small monthly fee. And Fnora, like any valuable tool, requires some due diligence in setup and a small amount of learning in order to use its full functionality.

Subscriptions

Making Fnora subscription-based allows us freedom from ads and all the associated pernicious practices employed by "the Bird and the Friend" that turn their users into a commodity. As of this writing, our plan is to charge $10 a month with the ability to mitigate the subscription fee through our referral program. All this will happen when Fnora ports over to the.com domain next month. Until then, the only thing we ask of our invitation-only alpha (.net) users is to give us constructive feedback.

Channels

When setting up an account, users are asked to create preset channels beyond the default "public" option. Some obvious ones might be "work," "family," "closest friends," "sorority sisters," etc. What this does is allows users to create posts for targeted audiences' eyes only. This way they don't have to worry about their mother, or their children for that matter, to see mini-blogs about preferred cannabis species, political leanings, or struggles with a personal health issues. Upon clicking on "New Post," this is what users see, except their own profiles and not my big bus-head.

Notice I've only identified four channels so far- "Is Public" is always available at the top. Also notice that New Posts require a title. From the very inception of a post, users have to put thought into what they want to say and to whom they want to say it. Fnora is not a platform for mindless blather. After naming the post, the user scrolls down to the editor window - pictured below. In this case, I deleted the QTML to show that it is unnecessary for this simple paragraph. One very useful trick on longer posts is to go to the little corner tab on the bottom right of the editor box and expand the box using the mouse cursor.

Upon entering "Preview," this is what users will see - pictured below. This gives the user a brief pause to look over the post, correct any mistakes, and maybe even ask himself, "should I really post this?"

Now the user can hit "Publish" or save the draft for further contemplation and/or later editing. It's really that simple, but does require a couple extra steps to choose the targeted audience, think enough about the post to give it a title, and lastly to give the post a once-over before posting "their" where there's supposed to be a "they're."

QTML

QTML is a markup language created by Carl Milsted, Jr., Fnora's coder and founder. It is an elegant, simplified alternative to HTML that anyone can learn. Along with being a physicist and computer scientist who values simple, lean, hardy code, Carl understands the value of keyboarding simplicity. HTML is the backbone of the internet in many ways, but it is bloated code that's not always intuitive and is difficult to type.

Part of our motivation for creating Fnora and QTML in particular is to make coding and simple styling understandable to those who have never done it. Once Fnora takes off, we may add a WYSIWYG editor, but for now, we want our users to learn to drive stick before moving on to an automatic. They'll be better code-drivers in the long run. And keep in mind, everyone, Fnora can be used without QTML just like one would at "the Bird and the Friend." Just know that the ability to properly style content is always available.

In lieu of having me paste over pictures of the QTML here, readers can simply use the "View QTML" button that Carl has provided for us on all posts to see my implementation of some basic QTML for headings and pics. I like to use a paragraph tag just so I can see it better, but Carl chides me for it as it's unnecessary.

And finally, regarding QTML, our illustrious coder-Carl has written a tutorial HERE that he updates as he adds more style functions, and, I will begin making video tutorials later this week on Fnora account setup, general useage, and QTML.

Much More To Come

Keep in mind that this is just scratching the surface of Fnora's current capabilities. Stay tuned here for very near-future posts on

  • Messaging - two party and multi-party "conferencing."
  • Groups - member generated open, public, private, and secret groups.
  • Blogs - easily styled blogs for all members "what the internet was meant to be."

Thanks everyone, and feel free to contact me at Steve@fnora.net for any inquiries and/or to become an alpha member.

This needs to be re-written as a Marxist dictate. "The people will learn a simplified alternative to HTML, which was created by the capitalist pigs to allow an artificial freedom. Chairman Milsted has personally worked with the People's Committee on Styling to create a syntax that expresses the socialist values of Fnora, allowing you to express good ideas in support of the Communist State through a well-accepted boldings, italics, and when necessary, strike-throughs.

I've invited some folks from another platform to test drive Conntects. Given the rebranding, it would be helpful to review all these posts/documentation and replace instances of "Fnora" with "Conntects" or "Fnora aka Conntects" or similar.

Thanks so much, Chris. I've messaged a couple of your new referrals.
