I was reading the other night on my screened in porch, and this rascal came in through the cat door:
I growled at him, and he waddled off. Then he came back in for a repeat several times in rapid succession. I think if I held still he would have happily eaten the cat food three feet from my feet. Note the foot rest in the picture.

Kind of surprising they haven't been domesticated. Even wild raccoons tame up readily -- possibly more so than feral house cats.
American squirrels can also be pets. They were quite popular in the 1800s.
